Spreadsheets & iOS 11

Tuesday, September 26, 2017 — 6-7pm One-on-One Help Session, 7-8:30pm Q&A

DUNHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY, 76 MAIN ST., WHITESBORO, NY 13492

Spreadsheets can be excellent tools for a variety of uses. Whether you’re using them for statistical analysis, or just to keep track of your baseball card collection, spreadsheets can help you track, organize and find your data faster. Ron Kopelman will be talking about using spreadsheets and the various software available.

Peter Chien will then share some information about Apple’s latest mobile operating system, iOS 11. Should you upgrade yet? Have you made the upgrade already? We’ll discuss some things you might want to take into consideration before upgrading.

Question & Answer

Tuesday, August 22, 2017 — 6-7pm One-on-One Help Session, 7-8:30pm Q&A

DUNHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY, 76 MAIN ST., WHITESBORO, NY 13492

Whether you’re having trouble with your software or hardware we are here to help you! Although we set aside time at the beginning of each meeting to help you with problems that have been bothering you, this is an excellent opportunity to access the group’s collective knowledge. Did your latest update wreak havoc on your files? Did you know that iOS updates often turn on your Bluetooth option? If you don’t use Bluetooth on your mobile device (iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad) then you are draining your battery unnecessarily. These are the types of things you can learn by coming and asking questions!

Productivity Apps for Mobile Devices

Tuesday, May 23, 2017 — 6-7pm One-on-One Help Session, 7-8:30pm Presentation

DUNHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY, 76 MAIN ST., WHITESBORO, NY 13492

Group Vice President Peter Chien will be leading a roundtable discussion about productivity apps for mobile devices. Years ago there were activities that could only be done on a computer. These days many of those activities can be accomplished on our iPhones or iPads. We’ll be discussing apps that allow our phones/tablets to take the place of computers.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

Backing Up With Time Machine and Using “About This Mac”

Tuesday, February 28, 2017 — 6-7pm One-On-One Help; 7-8:15pm Presentation

DUNHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY, 76 MAIN ST., WHITESBORO, NY 13492

Imagine your cat knocked your computer off the desk or your hard disk suddenly decided to stop spinning. Would your important documents be safely backed up, or would they be lost? Most of us go about our days not thinking about the impact that a broken computer would have on our lives. Apple has made it very simple for us to create and manage back-ups of our important data, but how many of us are taking advantage of the tools they’ve provided?

Group Vice President Peter Chien will discuss and demonstrate backing up a computer with Time Machine and some really neat tips for using About This Mac to do more than just tell you how much memory you have or how old your computer is.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

iOS 10 and macOS Sierra

Tuesday, November 22, 2016 — 6-7pm One-on-one Help / 7-8:30pm Presentation

DUNHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY, 76 MAIN ST., WHITESBORO, NY 13492

Apple’s pattern the past several years has been to release new versions of its iOS operating system for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches, and its operating system for Macintosh computers (formerly “Mac OS X,” then “OS X,” and now “macOS”) in the fall. This year, they released iOS 10 and macOS Sierra. So what’s new in these new operating systems? That’s the subject of the November 2016 meeting. We’ll show you what Apple says is great about iOS 10 and macOS Sierra, and then we’ll discuss what unique features (and problems?) users have found who have adopted the new OSs. Hope to see you on November 22 for a lively discussion.

Buyer’s Guide

Tuesday, October 25, 2016 6-7pm One-on-One Help / 7-8:30pm Presentation

DUNHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY, 76 MAIN ST., WHITESBORO, NY 13492

It’s that time of year again! As it gets closer to Christmas we see a number of special offers and incentives for products we would like to give as gifts or buy for ourselves. Every year we try to help you make informed decisions when it comes to making purchases of computers and mobile devices. If you’re considering making such a purchase then bring all of your questions to the meeting with you.

Here are a few you should be thinking about:

1. Is this the right time to purchase a new computer or tablet?
2. Is this the right time to upgrade my phone?
3. How much memory do I need in a new device?
4. What features should I be looking for in a new device?
5. What do you want to use your new device for?

We hope to see you there!
